Indonesia drives growth for Malaysia healthcare travel

Indonesia remained the largest source market for Malaysia healthcare  travel in 2025, generating RM2.2 billion in revenue as MHTC strengthened its presence at Malaysia Fair Jakarta 2026. 

Malaysia Healthcare  Travel Council (MHTC), in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia, reported strong visitor engagement during Malaysia Fair Jakarta 2026, reinforcing Indonesia’s position as the most important source market for Malaysia healthcare travel.

The event took place from 4 to 7 June at Gandaria City in Jakarta as part of the Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026 (MYMT 2026) campaign under the theme “Healing Meets Hospitality”. The initiative brought together healthcare providers, tourism organisations and educational institutions to promote Malaysia’s healthcare, wellness and travel offerings to Indonesian consumers.

Indonesia remains the leading market

According to MHTC, Indonesia generated approximately RM2.2 billion in healthcare travel revenue in 2025, representing a 23% year-on-year increase. Healthcare traveller arrivals from Indonesia also rose by 16% compared with 2024.

More than 970,000 Indonesian healthcare travellers visited Malaysia during the year, highlighting continued confidence in the country’s healthcare system and medical tourism services.

Popular treatment areas among Indonesian patients included health screening, gastroenterology, cancer treatment, endocrinology, cardiology and orthopaedic surgery.

The event featured participation from 20 Malaysian healthcare providers, including MHTC’s Flagship Medical Tourism Hospitals: Island Hospital PenangInstitut Jantung NegaraMahkota Medical Centre and Subang Jaya Medical Centre

Other participating healthcare institutions included Alpha IVF & Women’s Specialists, Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital, Cengild G.I Medical Centre, Damansara Specialist Hospital, Damansara Specialist Hospital 2, GenPrime Everlink Fertility Centre, Hospital Picaso, MSU Medical Centre, Northern Heart Hospital Penang, OasisEye Specialists, Optimax Eye Specialist Centre, Penang Adventist Hospital, Puteri Specialist Hospital, Regency Specialist Hospital, Sunway Medical Centre and Sunway Medical Centre Penang.

The fair also included seven travel agencies offering tourism packages alongside official airline partner Malaysia Airlines. Participating agencies included Dwidaya Tour, TX Travel, Habibi Tours, Baltic Golf & Travel Specialist, A&L Holidays, AWB Cruise and Golden Rama Tours & Travel.

Several Malaysian higher education institutions also participated, including Taylor’s University, UCSI University, INTI International University, Todak Academy and MILA University.

Strengthening Malaysia healthcare travel

The event was officially launched in the presence of MHTC brand ambassador Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza, who highlighted the importance of combining medical excellence with hospitality and cultural familiarity to strengthen confidence in Malaysia’s healthcare sector.

She said: “My TTC journey took almost 10 years, and I understand how important it is for patients to receive not only quality treatment but also reassurance, understanding, and hope throughout the process. As a Malaysian, I am proud to help share the strengths of Malaysia Healthcare with our friends in Indonesia and the wider region.”

The event also received support from strategic partners including Econolab, JavaMifi, Sheraton Grand Jakarta Gandaria City Hotel and Batik Air, further strengthening cross-sector collaboration to promote Malaysia healthcare travel in Indonesia.
