Tourism Authority of Thailand showcased its high-value tourism strategy at CNN Global Perspectives in Bangkok, highlighting wellness, cultural experiences and opportunities to distribute tourism benefits nationwide.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has strengthened its international positioning around Thailand high-value tourism, wellness and cultural experiences through its participation in CNN Global Perspectives: In Bangkok. Held on 14 October 2026 at The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok, the inaugural Asian edition brought together international leaders, investors and policymakers. The event coincided with the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group Annual Meetings, providing Thailand with a platform to promote tourism as part of its wider economic development strategy.
- TAT supported the inaugural Asian edition of CNN Global Perspectives in Bangkok, positioning tourism alongside international business, investment and economic discussions.
- Thailand is pursuing a 60:40 distribution of tourism activity between major and emerging destinations to spread economic benefits more widely.
- Wellness, cultural identity and the Amazing 5 Economy strategy form key elements of Thailand’s shift towards higher-value visitor experiences.
Thailand highlights tourism’s role in the wider economy
CNN Global Perspectives brought together senior figures from government, finance, business and the creative industries to discuss the forces shaping global development. The programme featured conversations on technology, healthcare, geopolitics, culture and economic transformation, while CNN extended coverage across its international platforms.
The event opened with remarks from Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister of Thailand. Other participants included Hyun Song Shin, Governor of the Bank of Korea; Tan Su Shan, Chief Executive Officer of DBS Group; and Chadatip Chutrakul, Chief Executive Officer of Siam Piwat Group.
For TAT, the gathering provided an opportunity to present Thailand as more than a leisure destination. The organisation highlighted tourism’s connections with international investment, business development, cultural exchange and quality of life.
Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said:
“This global convergence gave Thailand an important opportunity to place tourism within a wider national context, connecting our Visitor Economy with wellness, culture, business, investment, international exchange and quality of life. Through CNN’s global platform, TAT presented Thailand not only as a leading tourism destination, but as a Global Wellness Destination offering meaningful experiences for travellers increasingly focused on physical and mental well-being.”
TAT shifts focus towards value and regional tourism distribution
A central element of Thailand’s tourism strategy is the transition from measuring success primarily through visitor arrivals towards generating broader economic value. Under this approach, TAT aims to encourage tourism expenditure across a wider range of destinations, communities and businesses.
The authority is working towards a 60:40 distribution between established tourism centres and emerging destinations. This objective seeks to support regional development while reducing the concentration of tourism activity in the country’s most visited locations.
These priorities featured in a fireside discussion between Thapanee Kiatphaibool and Anita Mandarita, Special Advisor to the Secretary-General of UN Tourism. Their conversation explored the relationship between tourism, well-being, Thai cultural identity and economic opportunities.
Thapanee also emphasised the importance of developing meaningful connections between visitors and destinations.
“Thailand’s next chapter in tourism is about creating value that reaches further to travellers, communities, businesses and the country as a whole. Our Visitor Economy direction looks beyond arrivals towards meaningful and distinctly Thai experiences and a wider distribution of opportunities. Tourism can become a gateway to a deeper relationship with Thailand, connecting people not only with our destinations, but also with our culture, ideas and wider opportunities. Beauty makes people admire a destination, but charm makes people fall in love with it. And when people fall in love with Thailand, they will always find a reason to return.”

Wellness becomes a central pillar of Thailand’s tourism strategy
TAT is placing greater emphasis on wellness through its communication concept, “Healing is the New Luxury”. The initiative positions Thailand around experiences that promote relaxation, personal well-being and reconnection with nature and local culture.
Rather than focusing exclusively on conventional luxury accommodation, the concept highlights the value of time, restorative environments and personalised experiences. Thailand’s traditional healing practices, mindfulness and established spa culture provide a foundation for this positioning.
Meanwhile, modern healthcare, preventive health services and wellness resorts offer opportunities to attract travellers interested in longevity and healthier lifestyles. The combination allows hospitality businesses to develop experiences that connect traditional Thai practices with contemporary wellness services.
The strategy also supports Thailand’s ambition to compete more strongly in international wellness tourism while encouraging visitors to explore destinations beyond established resort areas.
Amazing 5 Economy connects tourism with new opportunities
Thailand’s wider tourism development approach is supported by TAT’s Amazing 5 Economy strategy. The framework combines the Life, Sub-Culture, Night, Circular and Platform economies to encourage more diverse forms of tourism activity.
Within the Life Economy, TAT is promoting health, wellness, longevity and quality of life. Meanwhile, the Night Economy creates opportunities for evening attractions, entertainment and hospitality businesses to extend visitor experiences beyond daytime activities.
The Circular Economy focuses on resource efficiency and sustainability, while the Platform Economy recognises the importance of digital services and technology. The Sub-Culture Economy, in turn, highlights emerging travel interests and experiences linked to distinctive communities and lifestyles.
Alongside these priorities, TAT continues to promote Thai-ness as a defining element of the visitor experience. Traditional hospitality, gastronomy, festivals, arts and everyday cultural practices contribute to the country’s distinctive tourism identity.
Industry outlook: High-value tourism creates wider business opportunities
Thailand high-value tourism presents opportunities for hotels, tour operators, wellness providers and local businesses to develop more specialised visitor experiences. In particular, combining wellness, culture and regional attractions could encourage travellers to spend more time exploring different parts of the country.
For emerging destinations, the 60:40 distribution objective could support greater participation in the visitor economy. However, achieving a more balanced tourism model will require investment in transport connectivity, service standards, workforce development and destination management.
Bangkok’s hosting of CNN Global Perspectives also reinforced the capital’s role as an international meeting and business events destination. Such gatherings provide opportunities for the hospitality sector while connecting tourism promotion with wider commercial and investment discussions.
Through its participation in the event, TAT reaffirmed its intention to develop a tourism economy that places greater emphasis on visitor value, cultural identity and the distribution of economic opportunities across Thailand.
