Timor-Leste has officially joined ASEAN, marking a major milestone for regional integration and economic cooperation. The move creates new opportunities for trade, tourism and connectivity in Southeast Asia.
Timor-Leste joins ASEAN, becoming the bloc’s 11th member. The accession was confirmed on 26 October 2025 at the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur. This marks a historic step in the country’s regional integration.
Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão said the achievement shows national resilience and ambition. He noted that the country will continue reforms and strengthen governance to support sustainable development. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim added that the move completes the ASEAN family and deepens regional unity.
The accession followed years of technical preparation. The International Trade Centre, with EU funding, supported institutional readiness. Assistance included training, negotiation support and guidance on key ASEAN agreements on goods, services and investment. Parliament and ministries received materials in Tetum, Portuguese and English to ensure a smooth transition. Business groups also received capacity-building to prepare MSMEs for new market opportunities.
Timor-Leste joins ASEAN as tourism and connectivity rise across Southeast Asia. The decision increases the country’s visibility and can attract more investment in infrastructure and hospitality. It may also enhance air access and cooperation with regional airlines and tourism boards.
Further work will now focus on implementing ASEAN rules and advancing reforms. International partners have pledged continued support to help national institutions engage fully in regional frameworks.
Timor-Leste joins ASEAN in a move that reinforces inclusiveness and shared growth. The country gains stronger ties for travel, trade and economic cooperation, while ASEAN welcomes a new voice shaping the region’s future.
