The Maldives has been announced as the Official Host Country of ITB Berlin 2027, positioning the Indian Ocean destination at the centre of the global travel industry during the world’s leading travel trade show.

The partnership agreement was signed during ITB Berlin 2026 by Ibrahim Shiuree, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Visit Maldives (MMPRC), and Dr. Mario Tobias, Chief Executive Officer of Messe Berlin, during an official ceremony at the Maldives stand in Hall 5.2.

Dr. Mario Tobias stated: “We are delighted that, 10 years after their first appearance as Host Country, the Maldives will once again take center stage at ITB Berlin. This long-standing partnership underscores the importance of ITB Berlin as a global platform and highlights the Maldives’ prominent role in the international travel industry. In 2027, we look forward to showcasing the Maldives’ extraordinary beauty and diversity, while also demonstrating how tourism and sustainability can go hand in hand.”

With more than 1,000 islands, turquoise lagoons, white sandy beaches and coral reefs, the Maldives is recognised as one of the world’s most prominent long-haul travel destinations. The country is known for its resort tourism model as well as growing interest in local island tourism.

As Host Country of ITB Berlin 2027, the Maldives will present its tourism portfolio including luxury resorts, boutique hotels, diving experiences, water sports, wellness retreats and cultural tourism experiences.

Sustainability initiatives aimed at protecting marine ecosystems and supporting local communities are also expected to feature prominently within the destination’s tourism positioning.

Ibrahim Shiuree stated: “ITB Berlin provides us with the ideal platform to showcase the unique experiences our islands offer to travelers from around the world. We look forward to welcoming the global tourism industry in Berlin and highlighting the diversity, quality and hospitality that define the Maldives as a destination.”

Earlier in the year, the President of the Maldives visited Berlin and was received by the German Federal President, underlining the strategic importance of relations between the island nation and Germany.

The year 2027 has also been designated “Visit Maldives Year”, a national tourism initiative announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The campaign aims to promote the Maldives internationally through marketing initiatives, participation in travel trade events, roadshows and digital campaigns.

As Host Country, the Maldives will organise the official opening gala of ITB Berlin on 15 March 2027 and will present a programme of events during the exhibition, which will take place from 16 to 18 March 2027.

The programme will include a national exhibition stand, cultural presentations, networking activities and press events designed to highlight the destination’s tourism offering to international industry stakeholders.

By assuming the Host Country role, the Maldives aim to strengthen tourism partnerships and reinforce the importance of the German and European travel markets for the destination.
