JW Marriott opens first Tokyo hotel, blending luxury and mindfulness

JW Marriott debuts its first Tokyo hotel in Takanawa Gateway City, introducing Mindful Rooms and holistic design inspired by Zen philosophy.

JW Marriott announced the opening of the JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo, marking the brand’s second property in Japan. Strategically located in Takanawa Gateway City, Tokyo’s newest urban development known as the “city of the future,” the hotel combines Zen-inspired design, contemporary elegance, and exceptional connectivity.

Conveniently positioned above Takanawa Gateway Station, the property offers seamless access to major transport links, including a 20-minute connection to Haneda Airport and walking distance to Shinagawa Station, which will serve as the terminus for the future Chuo Shinkansen line to Nagoya and Osaka.

Bruce Rohr, Vice President & Global Brand Leader, JW Marriott, described the launch as “a milestone opening in the brand’s continued global expansion – where a warm approach to luxury meets world-class hospitality.” He added, “With the launch of this hotel, we will introduce the brand’s new Mindful Rooms & Suites concept in Asia, reaffirming our commitment to holistic well-being.”

A sanctuary of balance and design

Designed by Yabu Pushelberg, JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo presents a “timeless sanctuary of balance and mindfulness.” The entrance features a Zen-inspired installation with mirrored Mount Fuji, symbolizing harmony and serenity. On the 30th floor, the reception area opens to panoramic views of Tokyo Bay and Gotenyama Hill, enriched with Kamakura-bori artwork and photography by Sho Makishima.

A highlight of the Lobby Lounge is The Tree House, a luminous art installation created with Lasvit, expressing “the artistry of nature within the hotel’s serene environment.”

The property features 200 guest rooms and suites with minimalist Japanese interiors, natural materials, and floor-to-ceiling city views. JW Marriott Tokyo will also introduce the brand’s signature Mindful Rooms & Suites in December 2025 — the first in Asia — designed to inspire rest, reflection, and well-being.

Elevated dining and event experiences

The hotel’s culinary offering includes several distinct venues. At Kakō, guests can experience washoku cuisine with seasonal sashimi, wagyu, and tempura, complemented by sake from all 46 Japanese prefectures. Saki, an avant-garde kappo restaurant, brings together Michelin-starred chefs Kazumine Nishida and Emmanuel Stroobant. Sefino, a modern Mediterranean restaurant in partnership with Chef Agustin Balbi, showcases seasonal dishes and a mural titled “Spring in France.”

Other highlights include Le Cres, offering artisanal croissants infused with Japanese flavors, and the JW Bar, which features craft cocktails and fine champagnes overlooking Tokyo’s skyline. Guests can also enjoy the Executive Lounge on the 27th floor, designed as a tranquil retreat with curated dining experiences throughout the day.

JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo also offers 1,140 square meters of event space, including Japan’s largest ballroom equipped with 270° movable LED walls, designed to accommodate both business meetings and social functions.

Wellness and family experiences

On the 28th floor, the Spa by JW blends modern therapies with Japanese wellness traditions. The wellness facilities include a panoramic indoor pool and a fully equipped fitness center.

The hotel also introduces Family by JW, a complimentary program aimed at enriching family stays through creative activities. Children receive booklets with drawings and origami, and upon completion, a JW-branded pochette filled with sweets.

Christopher Clark, General Manager of JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo, commented: “We are honored to open the doors of first JW Marriott hotel in Tokyo and bring the brand’s signature luxury hospitality and warmth to this vibrant destination. This hotel is designed to offer guests a haven of sophistication and tranquility, where every detail inspires moments of connection, reflection, and well-being.”

With this opening, JW Marriott strengthens its presence in Japan and introduces a new benchmark for mindful luxury hospitality in Asia.
