IndiGo expands long-haul strategy with firm order for 30 A350s

IndiGo confirms purchase of 30 Airbus A350-900s, boosting fleet for long-haul expansion and strengthening partnership with Airbus.

IndiGo has finalised a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, converting a Memorandum of Understanding signed in June into a confirmed purchase agreement. The announcement, made on 17 October 2025, brings IndiGo’s total A350 commitments to 60 aircraft, marking a significant step in the airline’s expansion strategy into the long-haul international market.

Strategic move toward global growth

The new order supports IndiGo’s ambition to evolve from a regional low-cost carrier into a global aviation player. With the A350’s long range and fuel efficiency, the airline will be able to connect India to distant international destinations.

Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, stated: “Today is a special day for IndiGo as we solidify our commitment to expanding our international footprint and offering unparalleled connectivity to our customers. The conversion of this MoU into a firm order for 30 additional A350-900s is a testament to our confidence in the future of Indian aviation and our strategic partnership with Airbus, further reinforced by the strong start of our long-haul operations.”

He added: “In line with India’s vision of becoming a global aviation hub and our aspiration to establish ourselves as a leading global aviation player by 2030, IndiGo is taking decisive steps forward. These aircraft, as they join our fleet in the years to come, will play a pivotal role in enabling IndiGo expand its reach, connect India with more destinations across the globe, and offer our customers new international travel opportunities.”

Airbus reinforces long-standing partnership with India

Commenting on the agreement, Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business at Airbus, said: “The A350’s unparalleled fuel efficiency, range and passenger comfort perfectly align with IndiGo’s ambitious growth plans and international long-haul network ambitions. This milestone reinforces our strong partnership with one of the fastest-growing airlines in the world, and we look forward to supporting their expansion into new long-haul markets.”

Airbus highlighted its strategic relationship with India spanning over five decades, noting that while the A320 Family has contributed to the domestic market’s growth, the A350 is now central to unlocking international aviation opportunities for Indian carriers.

Aircraft efficiency and sustainability

The Airbus A350 is recognised as the most modern and efficient widebody aircraft in the 300–410 seat category. It features advanced aerodynamics and new-generation engines, which deliver up to 25% lower fuel burn, operating costs and CO₂ emissions compared to previous generation widebody aircraft.

The A350 is also capable of operating with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and Airbus plans for all its aircraft to be 100% SAF-capable by 2030.

As of September 2025, the A350 has accumulated more than 1,400 orders from 63 airlines globally, reflecting strong demand for efficient long-haul aircraft.
