As the year-end holidays approach, online travel platform Agoda has unveiled a list of Asia’s most affordable travel destinations, including Vietnam’s Da Lat.
Located in southern Thailand near the Malaysian border, Hat Yai stands out as the most affordable destination in Asia, with an average room rate of just $46, according to Agoda.
The city is renowned for its vibrant markets and delicious street food, Agoda said.
A must-visit attraction in Hat Yai is Wat Hat Yai Nai, home to the world’s third-largest reclining Buddha statue, a testament to the city’s rich cultural heritage.
To compile the list, Agoda analyzed the average room rates of the top cities based on accommodation bookings. Bookings made in September or October 2024, with a check-in date between Dec. 24 – 31, 2024, were included in the analysis.
Surakarta City, Indonesia, ranked second on the list, with an average room rate of $47.
The city boasts iconic attractions such as the Keraton Surakarta palace and the bustling Pasar Gede market.
Visitors can enjoy traditional performances and savor local delicacies during the holidays, making it an ideal destination for a culturally rich year-end celebration, Agoda said.
Varanasi in India secured third place, offering an average room rate of $49.
As one of the oldest cities in the world, Varanasi provides a unique spiritual and cultural experience.
At year-end, the city comes alive with vibrant lights and celebrations, offering a distinctive mix of spirituality and holiday cheer, Agoda said.
Vietnam’s Central Highlands city of Da Lat ranked fourth with its average room rate of $62.
“As Christmas and New Year’s Eve approach, this city transforms into a festive haven, adorned with twinkling lights and lively celebrations, offering an enchanting backdrop for unforgettable holiday memories,” Agoda desrcibed.
December brings cooler mountain air, adding to Da Lat’s end-of-year atmosphere and making it the perfect spot for a holiday escape.
Miri in Malaysia came in fifth with its average room rate at $65.
Located on the northern coast of Sarawak in Borneo, the city offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural diversity for a relaxing getaway.
Visitors can explore Niah Caves, unwind at the beach, and enjoy the festive atmosphere as Miri Times Square lights up with dazzling Christmas decorations.
Subic in the Philippines ranked sixth with its average room rate at $86.
With its sun-kissed shores and adventurous vibe, Subic offers a tropical paradise for the holidays.
As Christmas is a lengthy celebration in the Philippines, Subic comes alive with family-friendly attractions and vibrant local markets, creating a joyful setting for Christmas and New Year’s festivities by the sea, Agoda wrote.
Taitung in Taiwan ranked seventh with its average room rate costing $100.
Located on Taiwan’s easternmost coast, Taitung is renowned for its breathtaking natural landscapes and vibrant indigenous culture.
It is also the first place in Taiwan to witness the sunrise, making it a popular spot for New Year’s celebrations.
In recent years, Taitung has gained popularity as a year-end destination, thanks to its large-scale music festivals that begin in November, drawing visitors from near and far.
Nagoya in Japan came in eighth with its room rate standing at $109.
Visitors can explore the iconic Nagoya Castle and the lively Sakae district, all while savoring local culinary delights like Hitsumabushi (grilled eel) and Miso Katsu (pork with miso seasoning).
During the festive season, Nagoya’s winter illuminations and holiday markets transform the city into a magical setting, perfect for celebrating Christmas and New Year’s Eve, Agoda said.
Yeosu-si in South Korea finished the list with its average room rate at $128.
The coastal city known for its stunning scenery and rich maritime culture offers a tranquil escape for the holidays.
Visitors can immerse themselves in nature on Odongdo Island or enjoy breathtaking views of the cityscape from the Yeosu Maritime Cable Car.
For holiday celebrations, Yeosu provides unique experiences such as the La Terrace Winter Village theme park, Agoda advised.
