The trend reflects a wider shift in travel behaviour, particularly among younger travellers. Airbnb’s Never the Same report found that seven out of 10 Indian Gen Z travellers prefer three short trips over one long annual holiday.

Recent Airbnb search data shows that domestic monsoon searches increased by almost 40% year-on-year. The figures indicate growing interest in flexible travel during a period traditionally associated with lower mobility.

Short breaks drive monsoon travel demand

Travellers are also changing the way they plan their journeys. Airbnb search trends show stronger demand for weekend getaways and trips lasting three to five days.

This preference highlights the growing popularity of shorter travel formats that fit around work schedules and personal commitments. Additionally, the data shows increasing interest in flexible experiences rather than traditional long holidays.

At the same time, travellers are looking beyond major urban destinations. Searches for non-metro locations increased by more than 40%, reflecting demand for places where the monsoon transforms landscapes and creates distinctive seasonal experiences.

Nature and culture attract travellers during the rains

Several destinations recorded strong interest during the monsoon season. These include Coorg, known for its mist-covered coffee plantations, and Kochi, which attracts visitors with its waterfront areas and cultural heritage.

Udaipur is also gaining attention, with travellers exploring the city’s lakes and palaces during the rainy season. Meanwhile, Varkala continues to appeal with its coastal cliffs and Arabian Sea views.

Jaipur offers visitors cultural experiences through its historic architecture, palaces, and markets, while Goa provides a different perspective during the monsoon, with quieter beaches, green landscapes, and local communities.

Monsoon trips become shared experiences

Furthermore, Airbnb data indicates that monsoon travel is increasingly becoming a social activity. Searches for trips with partners, friends and family are growing, with duo travellers showing the strongest increase, followed by larger groups.

Travellers are choosing different types of stays and experiences, including weekend escapes to hill destinations, villa stays, and family breaks along the coast.

Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb Country Head for India and Southeast  Asia, said travellers are exploring new ways to experience the monsoon season.

“This monsoon season, we’re seeing travellers embrace the rains in new ways – taking shorter, spontaneous breaks, venturing beyond traditional  tourism hotspots and choosing destinations where the rain becomes part of the experience. Through Airbnb’s community of hosts, guests can discover distinctive stays and local recommendations that help them experience these places in a more authentic and meaningful way.”

The latest trends indicate a growing role for seasonal travel in India’s domestic tourism market. As travellers seek shorter, more personalised experiences, the monsoon is emerging as a time to discover nature, culture and regional destinations.
