ITB China 2026 highlights shift in educational travel

ITB China 2026 will spotlight the shift toward purpose-driven  educational  travel, focusing on immersive, outcome-based learning experiences.

ITB China 2026 will highlight a significant shift in educational travel, as the sector moves from traditional sightseeing-focused programmes toward structured, purpose-driven learning experiences.

Taking place at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center, the event will explore how educational travel is evolving, with a growing emphasis on outcomes, participation, and real-world engagement rather than itinerary density.

Recent data from the WYSE  Travel Confederation indicates that while demand for youth and student travel remains strong, expectations are changing. Programmes centred on city tours and landmark visits are becoming less relevant, as travellers increasingly seek authentic, interactive experiences connected to the local context.

Purpose-driven learning reshapes educational travel demand

This transformation is particularly evident in outbound educational travel, where traditional formats focused on school visits and museum entries are being replaced by integrated thematic journeys. These combine classroom learning with field observation, interactive assignments, and group-based activities, creating a more cohesive educational experience.

Research from StudyTravel Magazine also shows that while supply across junior programmes, summer schools and short-term group travel continues to expand, differentiation is becoming more pronounced. Programmes are increasingly defined by specific themes, flexible formats, and clearly targeted audiences.

As a result, decision-making criteria are shifting for schools, parents, and students. Greater importance is now placed on the relevance of themes, the structure of activities, and the measurable outcomes of each programme, rather than the volume of destinations included.

Within the ITB China 2026 Conference, educational travel will be addressed as part of broader discussions on travel product innovation and experience design. Sessions within the customised travel segment will examine how providers can develop more immersive and content-driven offerings tailored to segmented, interest-based travellers.

In parallel, discussions in the MICE segment will explore how educational elements and participatory formats can enhance corporate events and incentive travel, contributing to more engaging and experience-led programmes.

Across the exhibition floor, educational travel will be represented by a wide range of stakeholders, including destinations, academic institutions, cultural organisations, and specialised service providers. This integrated ecosystem reflects the sector’s transition toward more complex, experience-focused travel models aligned with evolving global demand.
