Miami International Airport has received $94 million in FAA grants to support key infrastructure upgrades under its $9 billion modernization plan, aimed at enhancing capacity and resilience.

Miami International Airport (MIA) has secured a total of $94 million in federal grant funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to accelerate the implementation of its long-term capital improvement strategy. The funding is part of MIA’s broader $9 billion Future-Ready Modernization in Action (M.I.A.) program.

The funding includes a $70 million grant through the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP), announced on September 23, followed by a $24 million grant from the Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) program the previous week. According to Miami-Dade County officials, this $94 million total represents the highest amount of FAA grant funding awarded to any U.S. airport so far in 2025.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava emphasized the strategic importance of this federal support: “MIA is the gateway to our community and one of our greatest economic engines, so securing nearly $100 million in FAA grants in just two weeks – the highest amount of federal funds awarded to any airport nationwide this year – is a tremendous win for Miami-Dade County. This historic investment will help us modernize MIA to meet the needs of our growing county, create good-paying jobs, and ensure that our airport remains resilient, sustainable, and competitive for generations to come – bringing us closer to delivering a world-class, future-ready airport that will make travelers and our community proud.”

The Future-Ready Modernization in Action program is a multi-year capital improvement initiative designed to upgrade nearly all aspects of the airport’s operations and infrastructure over the next decade. Key focus areas of the program include:

Airfield and roadway enhancements to support increasing aircraft movements and cargo handling.
Terminal modernization and expansion, including new concourses and passenger boarding systems.
Sustainability and resiliency investments, such as energy-efficient systems and storm-resilient infrastructure.
Parking and mobility improvements, including upgraded parking facilities and integration of new transport solutions.
MIA Director and CEO Ralph Cutié noted that the funding will help sustain the airport’s competitive position globally: “These FAA grants will support projects critical to MIA’s mission to remain one of the world’s leading global gateways for passengers and cargo while preparing for future aviation demand”.

MIA plays a central role in Florida’s tourism and logistics ecosystem. It is currently the busiest U.S. airport for international freight and the second busiest for international passenger traffic. The airport accounts for about 60% of all international arrivals to Florida and contributes significantly to Miami-Dade County’s economy, generating business revenues estimated at $181 billion.

The recent funding boost comes amid record-breaking passenger volumes and continued cargo growth at MIA. With traffic demand expected to rise further in the coming years, the FAA grants are expected to fast-track high-priority projects that address both capacity constraints and long-term operational sustainability.

For travel and aviation professionals, the modernization of MIA represents a significant infrastructural shift that will impact connectivity across Latin America, the Caribbean, and beyond. Stakeholders in the hospitality, airline, and logistics sectors are advised to monitor the progress of these developments as they are likely to influence future travel flows, operational planning, and commercial partnerships in the region.
