The transformation of Cox’s Bazar Airport into an international airport is in its final phase and is expected to be officially launched in July, said Air Vice Marshal M Mafidur Rahman, the recently retired Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).
He made the announcement on Thursday while addressing a daylong workshop on the Right to Information (RTI) Act, held at Cox’s Bazar Airport.
“Cox’s Bazar is an international-standard tourism hub. Once international flights begin operating from here, it will significantly boost the national economy and increase the number of foreign tourists,” he said. “This is not only a milestone for Cox’s Bazar, but a matter of pride for the entire nation.”
He also informed that progress on establishing a full-fledged cargo hub in Chattogram is advancing rapidly. “Although limited cargo operations are currently underway, full-scale activities will commence soon,” he added.
Speaking on the RTI Act, he emphasized that the law opens a constitutional path for citizens to access information. “It is a vital tool for ensuring transparency and accountability in government operations. Effective implementation of the RTI Act is essential for curbing corruption and promoting good governance.”
Officials and staff members from various departments of Cox’s Bazar Airport participated in the workshop, which included in-depth discussions on the principles, application, and practical aspects of the RTI Act.
Following the session, the CAAB Chairman visited the airport’s ongoing development projects to assess their progress on the ground.
