Turkish Airlines resumed flights to the United States on Friday after more than two months, as Turkey eases restrictions against the spread of the novel coronavirus. Two planes bound for Washington D.C. and Chicago took off from Istanbul Airport at 1800 GMT and 1805 GMT respectively. Amy, a student at University of Chicago who did not share her last name, was returning to Chicago after spending three months in Turkey, where she graduated with online classes. “I feel like Turkish Airlines and all the airlines have taken a lot of steps to make sure everything is clean or sanitised. So I feel like everything should be okay,” she said, waiting in line to check in, Reuters reported.
To the United States, Turkish will start up flights to Los Angeles from June 24th and Miami from June 22nd. This will take the total number of US gateways to four. Each destination will be served three times per week for a total of 12 weekly flights between the US and Istanbul. The Boeing 787 is Turkish Airlines’ aircraft of choice to the US, Simple Flying wrote.
Also, few days ago Turkish Airlines relaunched its flights between Turkey and the UK. The airline will be flying three times a week from London Gatwick to Antalya – on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Turkey is now keen to start welcoming holidaymakers again following the outbreak, and the Foreign Ministry announced this week: “Turkey is ready to host you with her magnificent colorus, spectacular nature, safe tourism and developed health infrastructure,” as reported by The Sun.
Turkish Airlines became the airline with the most flights in the EUROCONTROL zone, completing 400 out of 8000 flights performed on 18 June 2020, according to Airline.
