To make Shahjalal International Airport more efficient and expandable, the government has taken the initiatives. As per the condition, a project worth Tk 20,600 crore has been approved for the construction of the third terminal to increase the passenger and cargo handling capacities of the airport. The Aviation Dhaka Consortium (ADC) will implement the project of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.
A total of five procurement proposals were approved at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Procurement. The total cost of these projects has been estimated at 24 thousands 296 cores 18 lacs and 268 Taka.
The approval was given at the meeting of Cabinet Committee on Government Procurement, chaired by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in the Cabinet Room on Wednesday (November 6th).
After the meeting, the finance minister told the reporters, ” The project of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Extension (1st Phase) purchase proposal has been approved to appoint contractor. The Civil Aviation Authority will implement the project with the proposal of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.
The finance minister said, “The work of our third terminal was not started properly. At first we didn’t have any area to start the work, so it got dropped. Those areas have now been captured. There used to be a terminal before to transport people and goods. This time the terminal has been separated. Separate terminal for export and separate terminal for import. That’s why some of the costs have gone up here. As the variations have risen, it will go back to ECNEC. With ECNEC approval, they will be able to start work.”
The Finance Minister said, “This is a priority project. We went with the plan without wasting time so that it does not have to come to us a second time. The final approval must be obtained through ECNEC, informing all the details so that it will not come to our committee again.”
The projects proposal states, to improve Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport’s passenger and cargo handling capacity the construction of the third terminal and other facilities have been taken under the financing of JICA. The first phase of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport’s extension were budgeted on 24th October 2017 at 13.6 Thousands 10 crores 46 lakhs 25 Thousands Taka.
Other projects approved at the meeting are – Physical Protection System (PPS) project of 3 Thousands 449 crores and 5 lakhs taka has been approved for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant protection. It was approved at an ECNEC meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last Tuesday.
